OPEN Session: DevEx Isn't Just for Developers
Wednesday February 12, 2025 11:00am - 11:25am PST
Benjie De Groot, Shipyard, Co Founder

Empowering developers starts with enabling all the internal stake holders frictionless access to WIP features. We will discuss how shortening the internal feedback loop is a key critical aspect of DX. One of the largest contributors to overall efficiency, time to market, and innovation cycles is waiting on product, QA, customer success and C-Suite feedback. When discussing DevEx we must understand the critical role that non-developer stakeholders play in the SDLC and how enabling them speeds up lead time for changes / deployment frequency. DevEx for non developers is critical!

OPEN Session: Authorize Everything Everywhere All at Once
Wednesday February 12, 2025 1:30pm - 1:55pm PST
Sam Kim, AuthZed, Software Engineer

Is your organization struggling to manage permissions across a growing landscape of applications, especially as AI applications are introduced into your tech stack? This session reveals how organizations are transforming their authorization strategy with SpiceDB, an open-source system based on Google's Zanzibar system.

Through real-world examples, we'll contrast your applications with and without SpiceDB: See how teams move from writing repetitive authorization code to a unified permissions system, from ACLs embedded with data to flexible permission structures that enhance RAG systems, and from limited AI agent permissions to more granular and manageable ones. Learn about why companies are adopting a centralized authorization system that scales across all applications while improving security and reducing complexity.

OPEN Session: Say Goodbye to Toil: Automating Cluster Upgrades
Thursday February 13, 2025 1:00pm - 1:25pm PST
Ben Ryves, GetYourGuide, Staff Site Reliability Engineer
Maggie Slukova, GetYourGuide, Staff Site Reliability Engineer

How difficult is it to minimize the toil of cluster upgrades while increasing confidence in deploying the changes?

Even when managed, cluster upgrades are an unavoidable part of cluster maintenance, yet they can also be a source of toil, stress and outages; either when upgrading Kubernetes itself or additional cluster components. Manually testing changes in staging clusters, deploying with a high sense of uncertainty - these time consuming tasks can be mitigated with tests. Add nifty automation and cluster management efforts are reduced to a bare minimum.

Is investing in cluster tests and automation worth it? Yes! This talk shows how a team of three engineers keeps multiple clusters continuously up-to-date with minimal time investment, effort and disruptions. By leveraging the e2e-framework and Helm, everything from Istio to cluster autoscaler is tested and seamlessly managed.

Cybersecurity organizations exist because of the technical innovations driven by the businesses they protect. For security to truly serve its purpose, engineers must understand their critical role in shaping the growth and effectiveness of these organizations.

As an engineer, you are uniquely positioned to be a catalyst for meaningful change. By embracing security as part of your process, you empower your organization to grow stronger and more resilient. Security is not just a requirement—it’s an opportunity to set higher standards. Challenge the status quo and demand excellence.

Key Points:
1. You Are the Change Agent
• Cybersecurity supports the innovations you create. Own your role in leading the charge.
2. Own Security as Part of Your Job
• Embrace it as an essential element, not an external responsibility.
3. Challenge Inefficiencies
• Push for smarter, more effective ways to integrate security into workflows.
4. Inform and Engage Leadership
• Your leaders own the risk. Make them aware of the challenges and opportunities.
5. Push Back with Purpose
• Advocate for solutions that benefit both security and productivity.
6. Build Alliances
• Find allies across teams who share your vision for a stronger, more secure organization.
