OAI Workshop: Intro to Contract Testing: Evolving APIs Safely
Tuesday February 11, 2025 12:00pm - 12:50pm PST
Frank Kilcommins, SmartBear, Principal API Technical Evangelist

Microservices and modular API architectures have transformed the technical landscape, enabling rapid innovation, faster releases, and decentralized evolvability. However, scaling these architectures introduces significant challenges. Managing dependencies between providers, consumers, and environments often leads to API sprawl, increasing complexity and diminishing returns. Traditional reliance on integration and end-to-end testing struggles to keep pace, resulting in high costs, lengthy feedback loops, and the rise of “zombie APIs.”

Contract testing offers a scalable and efficient alternative to address these challenges, rebalancing the testing pyramid by focusing on the interactions between API providers and consumers. With bi-directional contract testing, teams can leverage existing OpenAPI artifacts and design-first workflows to validate changes without needing expensive, brittle end-to-end setups. Providers gain insight into the impact of API changes, while consumers understand the surface area of APIs they rely on.

We will cover:

- The limitations of end-to-end testing in modern API architectures.
- How contract testing reduces complexity and promotes collaboration.
- The fundamentals of provider and consumer workflows for bi-directional contract testing.
- How to leverage tools like Pact to maximize OpenAPI investments and enable faster scaling.
- Demonstrations showcasing contract testing in action.

Whether you're navigating a microservices ecosystem or building a modular API platform, this workshop will empower you to evolve APIs safely, deliver value faster, and streamline your testing strategy. Join us to bring clarity and confidence to your API architecture.

PRO WORKSHOP: Harnessing Microservices for Scalable and Resilient AI Applications
Tuesday February 11, 2025 1:00pm - 1:25pm PST
Mayank Jindal, Amazon, Software engineer

AI applications present unique challenges related to scalability, complexity and resource optimization. This talk explores how microservices architecture can effectively address these challenges by decomposing AI systems into modular, independently deployable services. By adopting microservices, AI workloads—such as data preprocessing, model training and inference can be scaled and managed independently, leading to more flexible, efficient and resilient systems.

Attendees will learn how microservices architecture enables horizontal scaling of AI tasks allowing components like model inference engines to scale seamlessly as demand grows without affecting the entire application. We will also explore how microservices improve fault isolation ensuring that failures in one service do not propagate and disrupt the entire system. The session will cover asynchronous communication patterns, such as message queues and event-driven architectures which are particularly well-suited for decoupling AI services and handling complex, resource-heavy processes in parallel.

In addition, we will discuss strategies for orchestrating AI workflows and managing dependencies between services ensuring smooth operation even as the system grows more complex. The talk will also highlight best practices for designing resilient, scalable microservices that meet the specific needs of AI applications such as managing data flows, balancing computational loads and ensuring consistency across distributed services.

By the end of this session, attendees will understand how microservices can enable more scalable, flexible and fault-tolerant AI architectures. Whether developing real-time AI solutions, processing large datasets or managing multi-stage machine learning pipelines, participants will gain practical strategies for leveraging microservices to build scalable and resilient AI systems.

OAI Workshop: Linting API Descriptions: Consistency is King for Developer Experience! LIMITED
Tuesday February 11, 2025 1:00pm - 1:50pm PST
Erik Wilde, INNOQ, Principal Consultant

API descriptions are describing the surface of an API so that it is clear how an API works. It can be a good idea to check these descriptions against general good practices or against specific internal good practices for API designs. Linting is the process that allows those checks to be performed, by taking the description, letting a linter inspect it, and then get warnings or errors regarding the API design.

In this workshop, we look at the various motivations to use API linting. We then specifically look at HTTP-based APIs, OpenAPI as their description language, and Spectral as a popular open source linting tool. Spectral performs opinionated linting out of the box by having a set of build-in rules. Spectral allows users to add their own rules or completely replace the built-in rules. Spectral also supports modularization so that for example in larger organizations, different APIs can use different combinations of rules for various APIs. In this workshop we cannot give a complete tutorial of Spectral, but you will walk away with a good understanding of when to use it, how to apply it to your use cases, and what its general capabilities look like.

PRO WORKSHOP: GitHub Actions: Make Them Work for You! LIMITED
Tuesday February 11, 2025 2:00pm - 2:50pm PST
Eleftherios Chrysochoidis, Chubb, Lead API Software Engineer

GitHub Actions offer robust and free CI/CD capabilities to streamline your development process. In this presentation, we'll dive into the core components of GitHub Actions and explore how they can be set to work for you by demonstrating various simple and advanced use cases!

GitHub Actions is an ideal tool for any project hosted on GitHub. It provides CI/CD features out of the box and is accessible to everyone without the need for extra infrastructure or setup. The declarative way of creating Actions makes their usage really easy, and its remarkable free layer provides sufficient limits even for big projects.

Especially for Open Source projects, where usually there is more than a single contributor, the need for CI/CD is huge. What will happen if you own an open source project and someone creates a Pull Request with really nice features but adds Security risks in the project (e.g. due to deprecated dependencies) or if they break some of the existing functionality? Would you be able to check all of them on your own? Maybe yes, but it would take much more time compared to having them all checked automatically by utilizing GitHub Actions.

Join me to explore how to make GitHub Actions run faster by utilizing caching mechanisms, build Reports for Testing, Coverage and Security issues and integrate them with any open Pull Request in the community, to have an automated evaluation of the suggested PR and get notifications for them.

PRO WORKSHOP: The Dark Side of Open Source Productivity LIMITED
Tuesday February 11, 2025 4:00pm - 4:50pm PST
Derek Francour, Endor Labs, Solutions

There is a dark side to productivity with open source. In modern applications, the majority of code on which an application is built isn’t code written by your team. Modern applications are built on the backs of volunteer communities and open-source software. These volunteers and their software delivery practices all become potential attack vectors. The truth is that most organizations do not factor open-source supply chain attacks into their organization’s threat models today. Security incidents such as the CodeCov bash uploader script, the npm colors, and faker intentionally introduced malicious commits, and the recent PyPi backdoors targeting AWS credentials highlight the impact of supply chain attacks as a scalable attack pattern. To spread awareness on supply chain attacks so that organizations can scalably handle them we propose baking supply chain attacks into existing threat modeling procedures and software development culture so that organizations can champion supply chain management of open source in the places where they are most impactful, at development time. We will present a comprehensive, comprehensible, and technology-agnostic taxonomy of attack vectors, created on the basis of hundreds of real-world incidents and validated by experts in the domain. Following, we will discuss the types of defenses you can put in place to detect and respond to such modern day attacks and how you can work these defenses in based on your program’s maturity.

Today everyone is asking the question: "how can I use AI in my product?" The issue is not asking the question about leveraging new technological innovation but how we have the conversation between the technical people that know about it and those that want to leverage it to create great products.

In this talk, Chris Butler will show you how to have better conversations between those different practices in your teams. This will focus on a particular workshop called Analogical Innovation Mapping that is rooted in how new technologies find new uses based on their characteristics.

PRO WORKSHOP: Crypto-secure Data Management with In-Database Blockchain FILLING
Tuesday February 11, 2025 5:00pm - 5:25pm PST
Mark Rakhmilevich, Oracle, Vice President, Product Management, Mission-Critical and Blockchain Technologies

Existing security mechanisms are designed to keep hackers out. However, they have unavoidable vulnerabilities - chiefly due to human weaknesses (e.g., phishing attacks). We cannot prevent these break-in's, but we can minimize their impact by making critical data tamper-proof by using blockchain technologies.

Conventional blockchain systems, however, have been very difficult to use because of the requirement for new programming languages, tools, and workflow processes. This is changing as blockchain features are being incorporated in general-purpose databases. This makes it possible to implement blockchain in mainstream enterprise and government applications with minimal application changes.

This talk will begin by introducing the threats posed by hackers and compromised insiders. Then we will describe an implementation of in-database blockchain and how it can protect your data against these threats. We will compare this against conventional blockchains as well as share use cases from customers who have adopted this technology.

PRO WORKSHOP: Multimodal Search with Open-Source Tools
Tuesday February 11, 2025 5:00pm - 5:50pm PST
Stefan Webb, Zilliz, Developer Advocate

A recent and exciting development in the world of Generative AI has been the use of language to understand images, video, and sound. One example is multi-modal retrieval, which is the process of using one modality, like text, to search another modality, like images. It is not only useful for search engines across media types, but also for grounding LLMs in factual data and reducing hallucinations. In this talk, I explain how to build a simple but performant multi-modal retrieval pipeline using completely open-source tools and models: the vector database Milvus and HuggingFace libraries for modeling and data. I discuss techniques to use multimodal retrieval most effectively and increase recall, as well as some interesting and diverse industry applications.

[Virtual Exclusive] PRO WORKSHOP (AI DevWorld): Practical Tips for Building AI Applications Using LLMs - Best Practices and Trade-Offs FILLING
Tuesday February 18, 2025 9:00am - 9:50am PST
Sourabh Gawande, KushoAI, Co-founder and CTO

At KushoAI, we’ve built an AI agent that can autonomously perform API testing for you. While building this, we came across a lot of problems specific to AI applications built on top of LLMs that you don’t see anywhere else. Since this is a fairly new area of development, we had to spend a lot of time figuring out solutions for them on our own.

The agenda of this talk is to give you an idea of the kind of problems that you’ll face while building AI applications, various tried and tested approaches to solve them and trade-offs that you need to consider while building AI applications.

We hope that attendees will be able to learn from our experience of building AI applications and get started on their own journey.

Tuesday February 18, 2025 11:00am - 11:50am PST
Andrew Schall, ServiceNow, UX Research Leader & Strategist

Allowing organizational fortunetellers to create a future state vision of a journey map is risky because their projections are often based on speculation, intuition, and vague aspirations rather than concrete data and a deep understanding of the current state.

The journey from the current state to the optimal future state can be envisioned as constructing a long metaphorical bridge. This bridge is supported by various foundational pillars, each representing a critical aspect of the progression. These pillars provide the necessary support for incremental solutions to realize the optimal future state.

In this session, you will delve into envisioning an ideal user experience by creating a future state journey map. You will learn how to ground your future state journey map in current realities based on data and user research, ensuring that solutions are practical, actionable, and directly address identified pain points. By following this structured, evidence-based methodology, organizations can successfully navigate the journey from the current state to the future state, building a robust bridge to support ongoing progress, innovation, and adaptation.

[Virtual] PRO WORKSHOP: The Dark Side of Open Source Productivity
Tuesday February 18, 2025 1:00pm - 1:50pm PST

Tuesday February 18, 2025 1:00pm - 1:50pm PST
Chris Butler, GitHub, Product Manager

Today everyone is asking the question: "how can I use AI in my product?" The issue is not asking the question about leveraging new technological innovation but how we have the conversation between the technical people that know about it and those that want to leverage it to create great products.

In this talk, Chris Butler will show you how to have better conversations between those different practices in your teams. This will focus on a particular workshop called Analogical Innovation Mapping that is rooted in how new technologies find new uses based on their characteristics.

[Virtual Exclusive] PRO WORKSHOP (AI DevWorld): Running Billion-Scale Similarity Search at LLM Production Systems
Tuesday February 18, 2025 2:00pm - 2:50pm PST
Ohad Levi, Hyperspace, Founder and CEO

Search databases are integral to information retrieval and facilitation of similarity-based content discovery, playing a pivotal role in generative AI tech stack. Within this framework, the synergy of lexical and vector search algorithms enables the combination of structured and unstructured data, optimizing the precision, diversity and efficiency of LLM and RAG systems.

As a result, the demand for powerful search infrastructure is higher than ever: organization data is growing exponentially, while millions to billions of documents are becoming standard and the search queries become more resource-intensive, presenting significant performance, scalability and cost challenges at production-grade systems.

In this session we will explore various techniques to address those challenges, from space reduction to approximation methods as well as a range of acceleration technologies, which are highly parallelizable and designed for large scale real-time production systems. Transitioning from lab to production is not always seamless and contributing to the failure of numerous AI projects, the session target is to provide insights and solutions directly impacting the efficiency and success of future Gen AI applications.

[Virtual] PRO WORKSHOP: Multimodal Search with Open-Source Tools
Tuesday February 18, 2025 2:00pm - 2:50pm PST

[Virtual] OPEN Session: GitHub Actions: Make Them Work for You!
Wednesday February 19, 2025 9:30am - 10:20am PST

[Virtual] OPEN Session: Crypto-secure Data Management with In-Database Blockchain
Thursday February 20, 2025 12:00pm - 12:25pm PST
